Creating Auto-Graded Essay Questions

Use Long Answer questions with a reference answer to enable AI comparison grading for essays and detailed responses

Auto-Graded Essay Overview

Auto-graded essays are built using the Long Answer question type. Learners write a multi-line response; when you provide a reference answer, BlitzGrok compares their text to your ideal answer using AI and assigns a score ratio.

This is ideal for structured essays, short-answer explanations, and any response where you can describe what a strong answer should cover — without needing a single exact phrase like fill-in-the-blank.

The reference answer is never shown to learners. It is used server-side only for AI comparison during practice checks and assessment scoring.

How Auto-Grading Works

During Practice

When a reference answer is set, learners see a Check button after writing their response. AI returns:

  • A score ratio (how well the answer matches the reference)
  • Short feedback
  • Improvement hints to guide revision
During Assessments

When every long-answer item in an assessment has a reference answer, submissions are auto-scored after submit. Earned marks = score ratio × question marks.

Answers much shorter than the expected word limit receive a reduced score, even if the content is strong.

Factor Effect on Score
Content match AI compares the learner's answer to your reference for coverage, accuracy, and reasoning.
Answer length At or above 75% of the max word limit, length does not reduce the score. Shorter answers are scaled down.
No reference answer Falls back to manual educator grading — no AI auto-score.

Step-by-Step Setup

1

Select “Long Answer” as the Question Type

When creating a new question, choose Long Answer Question — multi-line, long-form text response from the question type options.

2

Write the Prompt

Enter the essay question or task. Be specific about what the learner should address.

Importance of science in man's progress
3

Set the Maximum Word Limit

Set Maximum Words to guide response length. This value is used when scaling assessment scores for answers that are too short.

200

Enable Multi-line Answer so learners get a text area suited to essay responses.

4

Provide a Reference Answer

Paste your ideal answer into the Reference Answer field. Write what a strong response should cover — key themes, facts, and reasoning. AI uses this as the benchmark; learners never see it.

A detailed reference answer produces more consistent AI grading. Cover the main points you expect learners to mention.

Worked Example

Science Essay — 200 Words

A fixed essay prompt with AI comparison grading enabled via reference answer.

Question type: Long Answer

Prompt: Importance of science in man's progress

Maximum words: 200

Reference Answer (vendor-only)

Science is the primary engine of human progress, transforming humanity from primitive survivalists into a globally connected, spacefaring civilization. Its core importance lies in its ability to replace superstition with empirical truth, providing a rational framework for understanding the universe.

In terms of material advancement, science has revolutionized human life expectancy and quality. Through medical breakthroughs like vaccines, antibiotics, and gene editing, deadly plagues have been eradicated, and human lifespans have more than doubled. Agriculture, powered by scientific innovations like the Green Revolution and genetically modified crops, now sustains billions of people who would otherwise face starvation.

Furthermore, science drives technological innovation, which forms the bedrock of modern society. From the steam engine and electricity to the internet and artificial intelligence, scientific discovery continuously automates labor and expands human capability. It bridges geographical divides through advanced transportation and instant communication networks.

Ultimately, the true value of science extends beyond physical comfort. It fosters a critical mindset that challenges dogma, unlocks the mysteries of nature, and inspires humanity to explore new frontiers. Without science, human progress would stagnate, trapping civilization in darkness and vulnerability.

What Happens When a Learner Submits

  1. The learner writes their essay in the multi-line text area (up to 200 words).
  2. In practice, they click Check. In assessments, grading runs automatically on submit.
  3. AI compares their answer to the reference for content quality and coverage.
  4. If the answer is well below 150 words (75% of 200), the score is reduced for insufficient length.
  5. The learner receives feedback and hints (practice) or earned marks (assessment).

Important Notes

Note Details
Reference answer required Without a reference answer, long-answer questions remain manually graded.
Not exact-match grading AI evaluates semantic similarity and coverage — learners can use different wording and still score well.
Short answers for fixed text For one-word or short phrase answers (names, dates), use a General fill-in-the-blank question instead.
Test before publishing Try the practice Check flow with sample answers to confirm grading behaves as you expect.
